Executive Secretary of the Amungme and Kamoro Community Development Organization (LPMAK), Emanuel Kemong explicitly stated that LPMAK is a community development organization established by the shareholders in Mimika Regency. This was affirmed by Emanuel in his opening speech at the commemoration of the 17th anniversary of LPMAK held in the  Cenderawasih Room of Hotel Serayu Timika, on Tuesday (16/4).
He compared the LPMAK programs  to the accumulation of water in a lake or in the ocean, being formed from the flow of many small rivers heading towards one point.
Similarly, the LPMAK program can be likened to a pile of sand formed from innumerable small grains, and it is a source of economic income, health services and education for the local community. On this occasion to commemorate the 17th anniversary of LPMAK, Emanuel presented the achievements of the LPMAK work program in general in the areas of education, health and economy as well as the various other supporting programs funded by PT Freeport Indonesia through the Partnership Fund. In order to realize its vision and mission in the areas of education, health and economy, as mentioned by Kemong, many efforts have been made.
“Among others, the vacancies in the Managing Board and the Consultative Board of LPMAK from some time ago, have been filled in accordance with the articles of association and by-laws of the organization,” said Emanuel.
Not only that, the capacity of the staff has been improved through training appropriate for the position of the employees, and filling in the vacancies among the employees through a mechanism of selection determined by the organization.
Also, based on the results of assessment, employees who have shown good performance will be promoted. The organization is also concerned with the welfare of the employees according to the personnel regulations of LPMAK.  Emanuel added, that up until now  PT Freeport Indonesia is the sole donor for LPMAK programs which is allocated from 1% (one percent) of the gross income of PTFI. LPMAK itself each year allocates a perpetual fund (dana abadi) for the continuity of its educational program, health program, community economy program and other special programs.  Every year the organization sets aside funds to be deposited into the perpetual account and other income for the sustainability of the organization in anticipation of times when income is low or when a program urgently needs assistance.
Regarding the management of the partnership fund by LPMAK, every year it is audited by an independent auditor. The results have always been satisfactory, and therefore PTFI still has faith in the organization and continues to contribute to the partnership fund for the community through LPMAK.  In the area of education, the number of participants receiving a scholarship has now reached 138 students.
The quality and quantity is continuously improved through efforts with partner organizations, and cooperation with several universities. LPMAK supports the government programs, particularly from the Office of Education and Culture by supporting the construction of elementary school buildings in a number of locations.
LPMAK through its educational program has built the Penjunan dormitory and its school, and also the dormitory and school buildings for Solus Populi School  in Timika for the children of the Amungme and Kamoro tribes.
To raise the quality of learning, as explained by Kemong, LPMAK is currently building a Multipurpose Community Center (MPCC) to accommodate elementary school children who wish to study science, mathematics, computer learning and English and for teachers who wish to enhance their knowledge.
In the area of health, LPMAK continues to provide community health service in several villages. Improving the health of the people is effected through the mother and child health program (KIA), the clean water program, sanitation and providing of toilets, dissemination of information and preventive efforts against malaria and HIV/AIDS, prevention of tuberculosis (TB). The immunization program and supplement food program is also continued.
“This year LPMAK will introduce a floating clinic, equipped with medical facilities. Rooms for in-patients, examination rooms and medical equipment. The clinic will operate offshore in the area of Otakwa up to Potowaiburu,” explained Kemong.
For health service, LPMAK through its Health Bureau, will continue to serve the clinics and hospitals and intends to add the number of rooms and facilities at the Mitra Masyarakat Hospital (RSMM) and the facilities at Waa-Banti Hospital (RSWB).
“We are also building a clinic with adequate facilities at Akimuga, increasing the number of health facilities at Kaokanao which is the “embryo” of Mimika Regency and will carry out repairs on the facilities of two clinics in Tsinga and in Arwanop, in  Tembagapura District,” said Kemong.
In the area of economy, LPMAK conducts training for the assisted groups in collaboration with banking facilities in Timika. In addition, opportunities are provided for the young local entrepreneurs who have potential for business through cooperation with the banks.
LPMAK develops the community through high quality programs that promise benefits for the community itself, for example a cattle-raising project in Akimuga, a sago project in Keakwa and Coastal Timika, and a plan to build a wholesale center in Timika to meet the needs of the people.
Furthermore, there are other programs to meet the needs and raise the welfare of the local communities through LPMAK. In the special program area, LPMAK provided support to two traditional organizations and the church denomination and other programs in accordance with the directives of the Managing Board and Consultative Board.
“All LPMAK programs are transparent and published in the internal and external media of LPMAK, the print media and electronic media in Papua and on a national scale, and are presented to related parties directly and indirectly,” said Kemong.
All these programs run smoothly as they have the support of the various bureaus within LPMAK. Such as the Bureau for Internal Affairs, Human Resources, Finance and Public Relations.
“More important is the strategic plan which is used as a guideline so that we know in which direction the organization and all its programs are heading,” added Emanuel. However, despite the smooth implementation of the programs, Kemong admits there are still obstacles and a number of other programs that have not yet been realized.
“Thus on this occasion I express my hope that we can continue to fight, as employees, as members of the Managing Board or the Consultative Board of LPMAK, to achieve the ideals of LPMAK,” said Emanuel Kemong who also explained the vision and mission of the organization.
The vision and mission of LPMAK is not just something to be declared and announced, but an objective to encourage the people to promote development in the Mimika Regency and the Province of Papua.
On this occasion, Emanuel thanked the partners of LPMAK, in particular PT Freeport  which until today has always given its full contribution to the development programs for the local communities.  (thobias maturbongs/willem bobi)
